Here at Budsamp Sound Designs a lot of time is devoted to replicating work of the 50’s tweed era amplifiers. To change or improve them with modifications would only be a disaster to the very unique sound that they demonstrated.
Some (but not all) have tried to duplicate those sounds but failed. I listen to the lingo out there and many mistakes are made. For example, someone buys old worn out capacitors and make use of them by ordinary methods to produce the original amp era sound! There is more too it! Those amps were built with bran spanking new capacitors and sounded every bit as good as they do today with new capacitors. If one wants old, crappy sounds that's fine but that is not what was intended in the new units back in the 50’s. Some others have strange ideas going on as well. I remember an incident at a club where one of the old amps had a scratching pot and needed to be cleaned/changed and previously noted this to a friend of mine. One guy got in my face about it and said, “That is why it sounded so great!? So I said, how is it then, when it was new that it sounded worse! Oh well, ignorance rules with many that have some idea that old was somehow old new? I gave up the case because I didn't want any swinging going on. It’s almost like a mindset that a car goes faster when its appearance is clean.
Our service is to keep the original designs new and to replicate what was new. They sound incredible and doing repairs does not hurt an old amplifier. We try to find NOS materials when possible, and do a test on them to be sure there is still a lot of life in them.
If you are in the market for an overhaul of your old tweed amp, let us be of service to you and let us bring back much of the resilience and crisp harmonics that the tweed era had.
The gentlemen's amplifier, Leo would have been so proud!
